Dr Rory Stewart

Associate Vet

I graduated at the end of 2020. I worked my first three years at a clinic in Blackwood before I had the opportunity to join the Flaxley Road Vet team in March 2024. Both the staff and clients have been incredibly welcoming to me, I love it here!

The day-to-day variety as a small animal GP is a a lot of fun; on any day, I could be going from a delicate soft tissue surgery that lets me engage fine motor skills, to an unusual internal medicine case that requires problem solving and discussion with colleagues, to a senior pet wellness check that involves treats, a good chat and a new medication regime. I also find it very rewarding to see the same patient back over the years, watching them grow, helping them to be as healthy and happy as possible, and catching up with the owners!

I also always try to emphasise that I see myself and an owner as a team, with each of us contributing equally important things to a pet’s health: I can provide all the medical knowledge in the world, but I will never know a pet’s behaviour better than their owner, and I am not the one who has to sneak a tablet into a treat every morning! Veterinary medicine truly is just as much about working with people as it is working with animals, and I’ve discovered I find that aspect equally as rewarding.

I read a lot of books, particularly fantasy and sci fi, and I regularly have game nights with friends (board games, video games, card games, you name it). My spouse is an equine vet and when the weather is nice (and sometimes when it isn’t!) we’ll take our brumby and Percheron out for trail rides in Kuitpo Forest. I also love seeing live music - the louder the better!
